How to change Windows services startup types?

In a related article, we discussed how you can manually start or stop a service on Windows PC. This method however will not change the startup type of the Windows services. For example, when you turned off a service, it will be started automatically the next time you start or restart the computer. When you want to prevent a service from auto start or keep a service always running in the background, you need to change the startup type of the services on your PC.

How to change Windows services startup type or automatically start services in Windows?

There are different ways you can access the Services window on your Windows computer. For instance, you can directly press the Windows + R combination on your keyboard to open the Run dialog, then type in services.msc and press Enter key to open the Services window on your PC. You can also right click the Start button on your Windows computer, then choose Run, type in services.msc and press Enter key to open the Services window.

You can find the all services’ status and startup types here. To change startup type of a service, double click the service to open its Properties window. The General tab opens by default. You can then find the ‘Startup Type‘ and change it to Manual, Automatic (Delayed Start), Automatic, or Disabled. Hit the OK button to save the change and quit.

Windows Services Startup Types

  • Automatic – services will start at boot time.
  • Automatic (Delayed Start) – services will start just after boot time.
  • Manual – Start a service manually when needed.
  • Disabled – Stop a service from starting, even if needed.

  1. Can you answer already? The startup type dropdown is disabled and greyed out.
    How do you change it to manual???

  2. the startuo type cannot be changed. there’s also no option under Extended saying start the service or restart the service nor stop the service. it just displays the description. and then also the startup type is set into manual (trigger start) which i cannot change. how do i solve this?

    • Is this issue specific to certain Service(s) only? as far as I know you can’t change some services related to system security, antivirus, et al.

  3. The start up option is not active and therefore cannot be changed from there.
    where can i go and make active so i can change it?
